Whats the movie wen the boys father is in jail for killing the boys friends father because he raped his son?

please help!!! i knw that those boys became like life long friends. wen they were young they had shoulder-length hair. the dude got older & he loved taraji p henson , she lived across the hall frm the apartment the man and his son (who got dumped on him by his mother) were living. the dude's friend got killed. if it helps, the scene i really wannaa see is wen the boy was hungry so the man went to go get milk and ran all the way to the store and back. the boy had to knock a cheerio off his arm . lol. it was funny but sad
