When you use a toner?

A toner can make hair a softer color-less brassy. My stylist uses it on me-I dye my hair red-because it makes the dye stay in A LOT longer. It does come out when you shampoo for a while after the dye. But I love it as without it the red would just completely rush out of my hair every time I have it dyed.
